Isola Trattoria and Crudo Bar
THE STORY
One day early in our travels, we arrived in an extraordinary village on the coast. The salty air, radiant colored buildings, and breathtaking mountains were intoxicating. As we sailed further away from the shore, a freshly caught tuna hit the boat's deck. Naively, we thought the fish was for dinner, but immediately our captain began to prepare lunch. Deftly, he skinned, boned, and sliced the fish, unveiling the most perfectly dark red Mediterranean tuna. The fish was then tossed with olive oil, salt, and the juice of a fresh lemon. He served it to us right there on the boat with torn bread and cold white table wine from his family's vineyard in the hills. I don't know if it was the freshness of the fish, the chill of the wine, or the beauty of the experience, but I have dreamt of that day everyday since.
ABOUT ISOLA
Isola Trattoria & Crudo Bar is a coastal Italian restaurant inspired by the Amalfi Coast, Italian Riviera and Sicily. Helmed by native Sicilian and former executive chef for Todd English, Chef Victor LaPlaca, Isola presents fresh and flavorful Italian cuisine that captures the spirit of the Italian provinces, where food, wine and hospitality are celebrated in everyday life. Modeled after the famously lush landscape of the Bobboli Gardens in Florence and the private Italian estates that line the country’s coast, Isola is a magical escape within Mondrian SoHo's 5,000 square foot greenhouse space.
Isola’s coastal Italian menu specializes in contemporary crudo - a modern interpretation of Italian raw fish flavored with olive oil, salt and citrus - with trattoria selections that include hand-crafted pastas, pizzas, antipasti and secondi. The wine program at Isola features an extensive but highly selective list of wines from Italy, Spain, Greece and Southern France, with 18 rare and reasonably priced options by the glass and over 100 selections by the bottle. The cocktail program is anchored by a rotating selection of market fresh cocktails and several variations of Italian classics, including the Negroni and Aperol Spritz.
